Only just discovered this band, believe it or not, but they would have been in my wheelhouse from the beginning, as I like my HC kind of weird and adventurous at times. They are described loosely as an anarcho band, but they don’t follow the template in the least. You could argue that post punk and goth informs the atmosphere and compositions more so than straight ahead D-Beat or similar. Would recommend for the adventurous punk fan.

McRad Lion Pure Not Like You Records This excellent discog from Philly’s McRad leads with their first 12”, ‘Dominant Force’, a blast of competent skate punk, followed by a few comp tracks, etc. and some ska/reggae mixed in. (No Guns reminds me a bit of the Clash for sure.)There are also tracks from the Thrasher Skate Rock comp and a dub featuring HR of Bad Brains fame. Their second album, ‘Absence of Sanity’ is their best offering, and burns with a great mix of NY style metal tinged hardcore and occasional tinges of melodic California style Punk that was yet to break huge with the Hot Topics crowd a decade later. The song writing is tight, catchy and mature and only falters with the second to last track, ‘Words of Life’, which is another one of those cringeworthy white boy reggae songs that wears it’s obvious Bad Brains worship on the sleeve. Verbal Assault Trial,  On/ Exit,  RIX-Core ’84-’86 Atomic Action 2013, 2018, 2021 Verbal Assault was Rhode Island hardcore to be sure. Well liked, well travelled and showing growth with each release, Atomic Action gives us three of their great releases, ‘Trial’ (melodic hardcore pointing towards Dagnasty and emo) and ‘On’ and ‘Exit’ now combined as ‘On/Exit”, a post-hardcore masterpiece that we might unfairly compare to early Dag Nasty or late-period Government Issue as a comparison. They also have a digital only release compilation of three RI bands from the day, which features eight live VA tracks. Not sure if they are taken from demos or another source, but still nice to have.
